Case Study: Rugged All-Weather Monitors for Humanitarian Naval Operations in Tonga

April 22, 2025

Mission Context: A Natural Disaster

After a volcano erupted and a tsunami struck Tonga in early 2022, the Australian Navy contributed to international relief efforts. The HMAS Adelaide was loaded with relief cargo and personnel, including a Deployable Geospatial Support Team (DGST) responsible for carrying out detailed hydrographic surveys around the islands.

Such underwater scans were crucial to ensure that landing zones were secure for aid delivery, without sunken obstructions or submerged flag pavers that could jeopardize the operation.

Challenge: A Harsh Ocean Environment

These operations demanded ruggedized technology that could survive 24/7 use on small naval reconnaissance boats—platforms constantly bombarded by shock and vibration, bright sunlight, and direct spray from saltwater.

The kits were required to work out in the open air, provide perfect statistical visibility on information, and resist even the most intense implements of the ocean without compromise.

Under such high-stakes conditions, any failure could result in delays, heightened operational risk or damage to crew and civilians.

Solution: All-Weather Monitors

VESA-mounted All-Weather LCD monitors were provided by VarTech Systems through working in conjunction with a trusted systems integrator in the UK and Australia, Unitronix. No additional customization was necessary, as VarTech’s rugged product line delivered on all the Australian Navy’s requirements, including:

  • Fully sealed design to block out moisture and dust
  • Shock-and vibration-resistant structure
  • High-bright, sunlight-readable displays
  • Long-term dependability in punishing ocean conditions

Our All-Weather products were deployed on small survey boats working off the HMAS Adelaide. The systems featured zero failures, enabling the DGST to accurately map seafloor profiles to help locate safe disembarkation points for individuals and supplies.

Why VarTech Systems?

The choice to use VarTech products was driven by several factors:

  • Established Reputation: VarTech’s proven performance in extreme industrial and military conditions made it a reliable choice.
  • No-Nonsense Durability: Unlike other providers, VarTech’s rugged solutions were mission-ready without the need for additional customization.
  • Trusted Partner Network: Unitronix noted that customer feedback regularly cites frustration with other suppliers—delays, missed custom specs, and poor communication. In contrast, the VarTech-Unitronix partnership emphasizes fast, accurate responses and dependable delivery, with a 24-hour turnaround on all validated requirements.

Results: Reliable Operations

Equipment failure is not an option in military and naval operations. As with every individual system that plays a role in such a mission, reliability is key, particularly when delivering humanitarian aid after a natural disaster.

VarTech’s All-Weather units performed flawlessly on Tongan reconnaissance missions:

  • The saltwater-heavy, high-vibration marine environments presented no obstacle for the Australian Navy’s DGST, delivering uninterrupted underwater surveys.
  • Fast and efficient deployment of technology that does not require field servicing or replacement was key to the success of such operating conditions, allowing the mission to be executed faster and more efficiently, saving time and lives during natural disaster recovery efforts.
  • Because of VarTech’s use of high-quality components and sophisticated engineering, the systems didn't deteriorate with time, even in highly corrosive marine environments.
  • Not only did these tough HMI solutions minimize maintenance and eliminate downtime, but they also delivered real operational value. Field teams could concentrate on the mission at hand, not the equipment.

This successful deployment reinforced VarTech’s place as a premier provider of rugged display technology for military and humanitarian operations. When failure isn’t an option, our systems continue to prove their worth—on land, in the air, and especially at sea.

Key Highlights:

  • Marine-Proven Design: Endured shock, vibration, direct water exposure, and extreme sunlight in open-air naval vessels.
  • Mission-Critical Reliability: Supported uninterrupted hydrographic data collection essential to safe humanitarian landings
  • Trusted Partnership: Quick, clear communication and proven performance made VarTech and Unitronix a reliable team.
  • Non-Custom Solution, High Impact: Provided benefits that can be realized without further engineering involvement—demonstrating the strength of VarTech’s turnkey ready-to deploy solutions.
  • Zero Downtime: Our products worked throughout the mission and did not need repair or adjustment, to the benefit of crews focusing on recovery efforts.
