Minnesota Zoo Enhances Guest Experience with VarTech's Rugged Displays

August 4, 2025

The Minnesota Zoo needed a set of rugged, public-facing video monitors to support interactive and educational exhibits throughout its facility. These displays would operate in extreme weather conditions, withstand physical contact from thousands of daily guests, and deliver reliable performance across multiple use cases.

VarTech Systems provided four high-bright, vandal-resistant display units that have been in reliable operation for more than nine years throughout different outdoor and guest-accessible areas of the zoo.

The Challenge: Hundreds of Daily Users, Harsh Winters

As a public zoological garden operating in Minnesota’s harsh winters, the zoo faced unique environmental and operational challenges. They needed commercial-grade monitors that were not only outdoor-rated, but could also survive prolonged cold exposure, resist vandalism, and operate 24 hours a day without failure.

Many displays were placed at child height, increasing the need for durable construction and impact resistance.

The Solution: DiamondVue and ToughStation Monitors

VarTech Systems supplied four rugged display solutions over a period of years, each selected to meet the specific functional and environmental needs of its installation site. These units varied in size, mounting type, and interface depending on how they would be used within the zoo’s public exhibits:

  • VT320VUHB-201 - ToughStation: A ruggedized all-in-one display installed at the Wells Fargo Family Farm entrance. It shows farm schedules, video content, and weather data through the zoo’s digital signage system. Its fully enclosed design with high IP sealing protects against moisture, dirt, and constant exposure to outdoor elements.
  • VT215P3 Touchscreen - Panel Mount DiamondVue: Located at the Tiger Lair exhibit. Guests use this screen to donate via credit card or cash and receive a digital tiger-themed selfie as a thank-you, delivered through email. Its flush-mount panel installation integrates cleanly into custom kiosk enclosures while protecting internal electronics from tampering.
  • VT260CVB – Chassis Mount DiamondVue: Installed at the Tiger Base Camp exhibit. It presents educational content and guest-captured images from an interactive game camera setup. Designed for embedded use, this unit offers flexible rear access to I/O and secure mounting inside exhibit cabinetry.
  • VT121CW2VB - DiamondVue: Positioned along the Minnesota Trail within an infographic display. It shows an educational video about underwater environments, with subtitles outlining the role of mussels in the ecosystem. Its compact footprint and sealed construction make it ideal for use in narrow exhibit panels with frequent guest proximity.

Each monitor was selected during the zoo’s exhibit design process, which gauges environmental, technical and experiential requirements. When screen durability, the capability for touch screens, high brightness and cold tolerance were all necessary; VarTech was the obvious choice.

Results: A Decade of Reliable Operation

Each in excess of nine years of continuous operation, the four monitors continue performing reliably across the zoo’s exhibits. Key benefits include:

  • 24/7 operation without interruption
  • Cold weather tolerance, demonstrated through sustained performance during nine harsh Minnesota winters
  • Water and dust ingress protection ensures safe outdoor use
  • Vandal resistance, important for use in public installations
  • Touchscreen functionality for guest interaction
  • Seamless integration with the zoo’s digital signage and conservation platforms

VarTech’s displays have performed reliably in a high-traffic, year-round public environment at a family-oriented zoo.
